Minister of the Interior Eimutis Misiūnas and Vice-Minister Giedrius Surplys February 13-14 pay an official visit to Greece. The aim of the visit - to assess the process of relocation of the foreigners in need of asylum.
Lithuania has already relocated 229 foreigners from Greece; according to the decisions adopted by the European Union (EU) Council totally 649 foreigners are planned to be relocated to Lithuania from Greece.
During the visit, Minister E. Misiūnas met with Minister of Migration Policy of Greece Ioannis Mouzalas and discussed the issues of relocation of asylum seekers from Greece to Lithuania, had an overview of the migration challenges and trends.
Minister I. Mouzalas stressed that Greece appreciates Lithuania's efforts to address the migration crisis in Europe. Minister E. Misiūnas pointed out that solidarity within the EU while solving the refugee crisis is necessary, therefore, each Member State which encounters a complicated situation must be given versatile support.
Minister E. Misiūnas invited the Greek colleague to visit Lithuania and to assess Lithuania's efforts in the process of relocating refugees.
During the two-day visit to Greece, the delegation headed by Minister E. Misiūnas, met with the representatives of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX) and the European Police Office (EUROPOL) to discuss Lithuania's contribution in operations conducted in Greece. Representatives of the Agencies welcomed the fact that Lithuania actively contributes to the ongoing operations, and emphasized Lithuania’s, as a reliable partner, role in solving the migration crisis in Greece. The significant Lithuanian contribution and an example set to other EU Member States were also stressed.
The Lithuanian delegation visited a refugee camp in Eleonas, from which relocations of the Syrian citizens to Lithuania are carried out. The camp administration presented the living conditions in the camp and discussed the existing problems.
During the visit, the delegation also met with the representatives of the Greek Lithuanian community. At the meeting which took place at the Lithuanian Embassy in Greece, opportunities of strengthening ties with the Lithuanian community, the problems stimulating leaving Lithuania, ways to stay in touch with the Homeland, as well as other relevant to community issues were discussed.
