During the informal meeting of the European Union (EU) Justice and Home Affairs Ministers in Helsinki, Lithuanian and Latvian Ministers of the Interior Eimutis Misiūnas and Sandis Girgens (Ģirģens) signed an agreement between the governments of both countries on the Lithuanian and Latvian border maintenance and  activities of border delegates.

The agreement regulates joint maintenance of the Lithuanian-Latvian state border and the activities of border delegates. It establishes the procedures for joint inspection of the state border, its signs and border strip and inventory of the state border. The procedures of examination and settlement of border incidents are also established by this agreement.

“I am delighted to be able to sign this agreement today after a long time of negotiations. Signing this document is an important legal precondition for both Lithuania and Latvia to jointly maintain our state border, share and jointly solve the emerging challenges, as well as to develop cooperation between our border guard services and ministries of the Interior”,- said Lithuanian Minister of the Interior Eimutis Misiūnas.

Within six months of the entry into force of the agreement, a Joint Commission shall be set up. It will be responsible for control of the maintenance of the state border, organization of the State Border Inventory, coordination of the issues related to the location of the state border.

In Lithuania, the State Border Guard Service under the Ministry of the Interior and the National Land Service under the Ministry of Agriculture (geodetic and cartographic works) are responsible for the implementation of the agreement.
