Minister Kondratovič Meets Frontex Management in Warsaw
The Minister of the Interior, Vladislav Kondratovič, visited the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, in Warsaw, where he met with Executive Director Hans Leijtens and other high-ranking agency representatives. The purpose of the meeting was to strengthen cooperation and discuss issues related to the protection of the European Union’s (EU) external borders.
Minister V. Kondratovič emphasized the importance of Lithuania’s partnership with Frontex and expressed gratitude for the agency’s support, especially during the 2021 illegal migration crisis.
"Strengthening the protection of external borders is one of the Government’s key priorities. We appreciate Frontex’s continuous support, as well as its operational and technical assistance, which enhances the capabilities of Lithuanian institutions," the minister stated.
Minister V. Kondratovič also highlighted the participation of Lithuanian officers in joint operations with Frontex. In 2024, the number of Lithuanian officers involved in missions increased by 80% – from 146 officers in 2023 to 261 in 2024. According to the minister, this demonstrates Lithuania’s commitment to EU border security and provides an excellent opportunity for officers to gain experience and improve their skills.
The meeting also addressed the evolving geopolitical situation and migration challenges. The Minister of the Interior stressed that despite a stable situation at the border with Belarus, the threat of migration instrumentalization remains. He emphasized the need for innovative solutions at the EU level for migration management, as current mechanisms are mostly focused on mitigating the consequences rather than addressing root causes.
One of the key topics of discussion was enhancing the effectiveness of the EU’s return policy. The minister stated that third countries must take responsibility and cooperate on the return of illegal migrants. He expressed support for discussions on new solutions, such as the establishment of return centers in third countries, which could help reduce migration pressure on the EU.
The meeting also covered the prospects for strengthening Frontex’s mandate. The minister stressed that adequate EU funding must be ensured for the expansion of Frontex’s activities and capacity-building, as this is a crucial prerequisite for more effective border management. He reaffirmed Lithuania’s readiness to actively participate in discussions on strengthening Frontex’s mandate, particularly in the area of migrant returns.
