During today’s meeting of the Minister Saulius Skvernelis and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway to Lithuania Dag Malmer Halvorsen bilateral contacts and priorities of their further development were discussed.

The Minister noted that the states are connected by particularly close and professional work in the area of law enforcement. “We appreciate efficient cooperation of the police in the fight against organized crime, active contacts of the firefighters, financial crimes investigation and other services, also – the input of successfully implemented projects into improving activity of law enforcement and other agencies”, – S. Skvernelis said.

During the period of 2009–2014, Lithuania received 84 million EUR from Norwegian Financial Mechanism and European Economic Area (EEA) grants for implementation of different projects. The Ministry of the Interior (MoI) is a Programme Operator for implementation of two programmes – Capacity Building and Schengen Cooperation.

Speaking about future priorities, Minister S. Skvernelis underlined the importance of joint implementation of the projects on domestic violence.  According to him, the experience of Norwegian self-government and police in reforming the area of crime prevention and assistance in the process of establishing the volunteer firefighters system would be very useful.

He also expressed delight at already visible concrete results of the projects implemented during the 2009–2014 period of EEA and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms and underlined the necessity of paying sufficient attention to their timely completion. It was agreed to have more active consultations with the Norwegian institutions on the search for partners to programme operators and other practical issues.

During the meeting, Ambassador Dag Malmer Halvorsen also expressed his appreciation of the efficient cooperation with the Public Security Service under MoI while ensuring security of the liquefied natural gas terminal.
