Ambassador Zhovtenko described the complicated political and economic situation in Ukraine and told about the on-going antiterrorist operation which is carried out as well as about other problems and challenges that Ukraine has to face.

Minister Barakauskas informed his guest that in response to the call of the Ukrainian community to help the soldiers of the Ukrainian Army and National Guard troops by providing to them high degree of protection helmets, the Police Department at the Ministry of the Interior will render assistance with their maximum capability – the Ukrainian soldiers will be supplied with helmets, bullet-proof vests and shields.

During the meeting, Ambassador Zhovtenko handed in to the Minister the letter of the Ukrainian Minister of the Interior Arsen Avakov. The letter contains information on the criminal proceedings initiated by the Russian Federation law enforcement institutions against the concrete governmental officials of Ukraine. In the letter, attention is drawn to a possibility that under the current political circumstances, Russian Federation may address on bilateral basis the Lithuanian law enforcement institutions regarding the criminal persecution of the Ukrainian governmental officials. The Minister is requested to adequately verify such incidences so as to avoid ungrounded consequences.

In their discussion, the Minister and the Ambassador also touched upon the issue of ratification of the EU-Ukrainian Association Agreement. Ambassador Zhovtenko noted that at the moment, ratification of the agreement signed on 27 June 2014, is among the primary tasks of the Verkhovna Rada. Affirming the importance of the ratification, Minister Barakauskas emphasized that only after this legal action is there a possibility for pre-application of the agreement enabling Ukraine to start the reforms that would bring the country closer to the EU and its values.
