On 17 September Minister of the Interior Saulius Skvernelis met with the Ambassador of the Republic of France in Lithuania Philippe Jeantaud. During the meeting issues of bilateral cooperation, migration and terrorism were discussed in the European context.

Minister S. Skvernelis thanked the Ambassador for the cooperation and rejoiced at constructive contacts with the French institutions – cooperation between the Lithuanian and French ministries of the interior has been successfully developed for more than 20 years. Trainings of officers in the police high schools of France are conducted, bilateral activities of the services in the areas of civil protection, public order, operative cooperation are intense.

Ambassador P. Jeantaud expressed satisfaction at stable and trust-based Lithuanian and French contacts in the area of the interior. He underlined the importance of developing and strengthening them herewith settling issues significant for the countries and all the European Union (EU).

During the meeting, exchange of opinions on today’s migration challenges took place. Describing the Lithuanian position, the Minister stressed the necessity of decisive actions while settling the migrant crisis.

“In order to manage migration flows and current crisis it is extremely important to ensure effective protection of the external EU border, to strengthen the role of Frontex in the areas of border protection and return – Lithuania contributes and will continue to contribute to the joint operations carried out by Frontex. Also extreme attention should be focused on the fight against organized criminal groupings engaged in illegal transporting of people, effective return policy”, – S. Skvernelis said.

The Minister noted that Lithuania, being aware of the scale of critical situation, will participate in the distribution of 120 thousand refugees among the EU states and will provide support to war refugees.

During exchange of opinions on terrorism threats, the Minister said “Despite different level of terrorism threat, we assess it as a common challenge for us. In this aspect, a coordinated and systematic control of external EU borders ensured by the EU countries’ services is of topical importance”.

The Minister also thanked the Internal Security Attache of France Dominique Dukaez whose term of office is ending in September for his work in enhancement of cooperation between law enforcement institutions of the countries and assistance for law enforcement officers while investigating crimes.
