Minister of the Interior Vladislav Kondratovič Meets with Latvian and Estonian Counterparts in Warsaw to Discuss Regional Policy
Minister of the Interior Vladislav Kondratovič met in Warsaw with Latvia’s Minister for Smart Administration and Regional Development, Inga Bērziņa, and Estonia’s Minister for Regional Affairs and Agriculture, Hendrik Johannes Terras. Representatives of the three Baltic States discussed key regional policy issues, explored opportunities for cooperation, and shared best practices for strengthening regional development.
“We are planning to establish a new Ministry for Regional and Municipal Affairs, aimed at strengthening regions by consolidating functions that are currently spread across several ministries. One of the main priorities will be to reduce regional disparities and ensure that regional policy reflects the expectations of the regions,” said Minister Kondratovič.
According to the Minister, regional development is currently overseen by multiple institutions, which leads to inefficiencies. There is a clear need to centralize these functions to enhance effectiveness, define responsibilities more clearly, and improve the quality of policy implementation. The newly established ministry is intended to become the main policymaker in the area of regional development, while also strengthening the capacities of municipalities and ensuring more consistent implementation of regional policy.
The ministry is expected to begin operations in the second half of 2026. Its establishment will be carried out in a rational manner, making use of existing state resources, retaining qualified specialists, and avoiding additional administrative or financial burdens. The Minister stressed the importance of avoiding duplication of existing functions and instead uniting relevant competencies into a single, strong administrative center.
During the meeting, the Minister took a keen interest in the experiences of Latvia and Estonia—both countries have already established ministries responsible for regional policy, and their experience may serve as a valuable example for Lithuania.
The meeting also included discussions on the development of border regions and the strengthening of transportation links. This meeting in Warsaw marked another step in enhancing Baltic cooperation in the field of regional development.
