State Border Protection and Cover Plan adopted for emerging threats
The governments have approved the updated State Border Protection Plan. In the case of a high threat level, the updated cover plan will ensure timely reinforcement of operational forces on the border of Lithuania and this will not require additional inter-institutional coordination.
According to Minister A. Bilotaitė, the updated plan, in the face of a high threat level, will ensure timely and efficient reinforcement of forces at the Lithuanian border without requiring excess interagency coordination.
"Given the changing security situation in the region, it is necessary to make new decisions regarding the strengthening of our state border, which is both the external border of the European Union and NATO. Together with the Ministry of National Defence, we have discussed the updated State Border Protection and Cover Plan, which outlines specific personnel and capability scope, necessary to ensure effective border protection, based on threat levels and evolving threats at the border," says Minister of the Interior Agnė Bilotaitė.
The State Border Protection and Cover Plan regulates the protection of external and internal borders when enhanced state border protection regimes are declared.
This plan establishes criteria based on threat levels, determining when and to what extent the Ministry of National Defence, the Riflemen's Union, and other responsible institutions and services are engaged.
The goal of the plan is to react promptly and proportionately to emerging or existing threats to the national and border security of the Republic of Lithuania through comprehensive measures and coordinated interagency and/or international actions, ensuring reliable state border protection and control of border crossings.
The State Border Protection and Cover Plan, as a legal instrument, is provided for in the Law on the State Border and Its Protection of the Republic of Lithuania, as well as in the Law on the Organization of National Defence and Military Service.
