The Minister of the Interior V. Kondratovič met with the Ambassador of the United Kingdom E. Boyles
The Minister of the Interior, Vladislav Kondratovič, met with the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Lithuania, Elizabeth Boyles. During the meeting, key issues of cooperation in law enforcement were discussed, as well as the presentation of the priorities and challenges in the field of internal affairs. The new policy of the United Kingdom’s rapprochement with the European Union was also welcomed.
“In the current complex geopolitical situation that Europe is facing, Lithuania and the United Kingdom must strengthen cooperation in all important areas. Therefore, the United Kingdom’s course toward deepening relations with the European Union on key issues is particularly commendable. It is especially important to focus on combating illegal migration, organized crime, and further support for Ukraine. I am confident that our experiences and knowledge can be valuable in achieving common goals, and only through close cooperation will we be able to effectively respond to challenges, ensuring our security and stability in the region,” said the Minister of the Interior.
According to the Minister, Lithuania is actively working to ensure a response to migration management, border protection, and security challenges, particularly in light of hybrid threats from Belarus and Russia. Lithuania is also implementing stricter control over legal migration to ensure that migration takes place through legal and safe channels.
The Minister of the Interior presented the Government's priorities in the field of internal affairs, emphasizing the strengthening of civil safety and crisis management, as well as ensuring public security. He highlighted the improvement of working conditions for law enforcement institutions, strengthening the protection of the external border, and effective migration management to address both national and European Union challenges. Minister V. Kondratovič also presented plans to establish a Ministry of Regions and increase the effectiveness of public administration and the State Council, strengthening competencies and attracting talent.
The Minister noted that supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression remains a horizontal priority. Since the start of the war, the internal affairs system has provided support to relevant Ukrainian institutions worth more than 7.5 million euros.
During the meeting, the Minister and the Ambassador also discussed the legal status of British citizens living in Lithuania. “Lithuanian institutions are committed to providing ongoing support to United Kingdom citizens and ensuring the smooth issuance and exchange of residence permits. I am pleased that this concern is mutual. Both Lithuania and the United Kingdom are making efforts to ensure the welfare of both Lithuanians and Britons who have chosen to live in our countries,” said the Minister of the Interior.
The Ambassador, in turn, reminded that starting in April, Lithuanians wishing to come to the United Kingdom will need authorization, which can be obtained by filling out an application on the United Kingdom's public services website:https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta.
