Activities of FRONTEX and priorities for better EU external border management were among the main topics discussed in this meeting which took place in the Ministry of the Interior of Lithuania.

French candidate for the executive director of FRONTEX F. Leggeri presented his views on the main activities carried out by FRONTEX as well as long term EU policy priorities for ensuring the safety of its citizens. F. Leggeri acknowledged the significance of security along the eastern external border, to which Lithuania also contributes considerably, to the overall security of the Union and stressed that it is necessary to achieve balance in the management of EU’s southern end eastern external borders.

Vice minister E. Jankevičius thanked his guest for a clear and comprehensive presentation of his position, especially for his attention to the security of EU’s eastern borders, as Lithuania is directly responsible for it.  Vice minister was pleased that most of the priorities outlined by the guest are in line with Lithuanian goals in the area of EU’s internal security policy and noted that Lithuania is an active participant in common actions for securing the EU’s external borders that are coordinated by FRONTEX.

Selection procedure for the position of FRONTEX executive director will take place in the meeting of FRONTEX management board, which will be held at end of November in Warsaw. Lithuania is represented at the FRONTEX Management board by the Commander of the State Border Guard Service under the Ministry of Interior - General Vainius Butinas.

Former executive director of FRONTEX Ilkka Latinen left this position in May 2014. The Agency is now temporarily headed by the deputy executive director Gil Arias Fernandes.
