Vice-Minister A. Burkovskienė discussed preparations for the Presidency of the Council of the EU

Vice-Minister of the Interior Ana Burkovskienė attended “PirmininKAVA”, an informal meeting held at the Embassy of Ireland in Lithuania to discuss Lithuania’s preparations for its Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) in the first half of 2027.

The meeting brought together EU diplomats based in Lithuania. The informal discussion focused on Lithuania’s priorities in preparing for the Presidency, the importance of cooperation with EU partners, and the most pressing European security issues.

Particular attention was given to priorities in the area of home affairs: migration and the management of the EU’s external borders, internal security, civil protection, and crisis preparedness.

Discussions on migration covered strengthening the protection of the EU’s external borders, improving the effectiveness of return procedures, cooperating with third countries, and addressing the instrumentalisation of migration.

In the area of internal security, emphasis was placed on strengthening cooperation between law enforcement authorities and combating organised crime, fraud, and hybrid threats. Participants also discussed improving crisis preparedness, strengthening civil protection capacities, and enhancing the resilience of critical infrastructure.

During its Presidency, Lithuania will seek to contribute to a safer and more resilient European Union by strengthening cooperation among Member States and promoting common solutions to the most pressing issues in the area of home affairs.

Lithuania held the Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2013 and will take on the role for the second time in the first half of 2027.
